The Virus kB Virtual Analog Synthesizer Keyboard From Access Music

Access Music is a German synthesizer manufacturer whose virtual analog line of synths have been universally popular among electronic musicians since the release of their first product in 1997. This synthesizer, the Access Virus, has been successively improved and upgraded over the years. The second generation of this line of synthesizers was dubbed the Virus B.

While the original Virus model was only a tabletop synthesizer module, the model B line included a new addition to the Virus family - a full keyboard version, the Virus kB.

The kB brings together all the features of the Virus B along with full-sized 61-key keyboard with velocity and aftertouch. Moreover, it even has assignable pitch and modulation wheels. Aside from that, all of the internal synth components are identically to the Virus B model, meaning it is capable of producing the same sounds as its module counterpart.

The keyboard of the Virus B has semi-weighted keys and transmits channel aftertouch, attack and release velocity via MIDI. Connections on the back of the unit allow for a hold pedal and a user-assignable pedal. The Virus kB has full MIDI support, an upgrade over the original Virus model, which allows it to control other synthesizers and modules easily. Enabling the "KeybToMIDI" function gives users the ability to control external gear and play internal sounds simultaneously on different regions of the Virus kB keyboard.

One minor difference between the original Virus B module and the Virus kB is the power supply. While the kB has an internal power unit, the standard B-model uses an external adapter.

Along with the kB, a second keyboard version of the Virus B was also produced - the Virus Indigo. Besides cosmetic differences, it has the same capabilities of the Virus kB with a smaller keyboard. Production of the Virus kB was discontinued with the launch of the Virus C in 2002, which was followed with the release of a new keyboard version, the Virus kC.
