Optimize Your PCs Performance by Cleaning Svchost Processes

All the services your computer does are located in svehost.exe files. Each instance of a svchost process may be seen in the Task Manager in Windows XP Pro or Process Explorer in Windows XP Home Edition. Services are grouped under a common host process.

Computer geeks love to get into the svchost files and manipulate the services and processes to better optimize the performance of a PC. Many svchost processes are not regularly used, yet consume a lot of memory. When the computer is started up, all the svchost.exe files begin to run, which takes a lot of time, slowing down startup time.

Periodically, startup processes should be viewed to be sure that there are no illegal entries of spyware or other malware. These can slow down startup as well as give svchost.exe errors. Svchost also organizes all the driver entries, including hardware installed by the user. If the user deletes a piece of hardware, and all the associated files are not removed, these will run upon starting up. This may occur with software programs too.

When manually deleting or disabling unwanted svhost.exe files, be careful to not change the entry Userinit, as this will prevent logging on to the system. Always create a backup disc when modifying any startup files.

To delete or disable an entry using SC.EXE command:
In the Command Prompt type SCDELETE
The name refers to the short name, not the display name.

To remove a service from the registry, use Registry Editor.
Start Regedit.exe
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

There are many ways to customize a PC for the user's particular needs by editing svchost processes. Changes may be made to Internet Explorer to make Google search on right-clicks. You can disable the "Reopen Last Browsing Session" feature in Internet Explorer 8. Your PC can become more user-friendly by making changes to its svchost processes.

The most important reason for tuning up your PC is to be sure that it is not carrying residual viruses that were not completely removed by your anti-virus software. Scrolling through all the entries in svchost can become tiring, confusing, and if you are not careful, dangerous.

The easiest and most effective way to clean svchost.exe entries is with a good registry cleaning and editing program. Svchost.exe errors will be eliminated, your PCs speed upon startup will improve, and you will be assured that your computer is safe.

How To Make Non-Linear PowerPoint Presentations

One major knock against PowerPoint is that it only allows linear presentations. Detractors say there is no room for creativity or going in different directions during the presentation. They claim that PowerPoint only allows for presentations that move from one slide to the next in a forward manner with no deviations. And they are wrong.

PowerPoint can be used to make non-linear presentations if you know how to use its features to your advantage. Here are some ideas for using PowerPoint to make a presentation that can jump to whatever idea you need to present at the time.

1. Design Your Presentation in Modules
When you are creating your presentation, design modules that you can present in whatever order you need that day. For example, I have modules on outlining a presentation, selecting colors, selecting fonts, adding text, using pictures, using graphs and many more. I can go through a certain module and then decide what module would fit next based on the audience feedback. Then I can jump to the next module as if it was meant to be done that way all along. An advanced tip is to have a module introductory slide at the start of each module and a module summary slide at the end of each module so the presentation looks completely seamless when you present.

2. Jump to Any Slide
The key to moving between modules is to use PowerPoint's feature of easily moving between slides with only keystrokes. To jump to any slide, type in the slide number using the number keys on your keyboard and press the Enter key. To use this feature, have a list of the slide numbers of the first slide of each module in your presentation easily visible when you present. Then, at the end of each module, go to your laptop and type in the correct slide number for the module you want to present next. This makes the presentation look seamless to the audience.

3. Link to Other Programs
By using the Custom Action Buttons within PowerPoint, you can set up a link to another file, such as a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet. This means that you can add a segment of audience participation where you capture their ideas in a Word document that is then available for everyone after the presentation. This allows for many different directions to be taken when getting out of PowerPoint. Then, you can save and close the other program and continue with the presentation.

By using these techniques, you can make your PowerPoint presentation as linear or non-linear as you want. If you want to proceed straight through from slide 1 to the end, you can. If you want to jump between ideas as the audience directs, you can do that as well. All within PowerPoint by using the power that it already has.

    Presentation Tips - Putting Together an Excellent Performance

    I was once asked this question...

    "Could anyone give me a few tips for an excellent performance at an academic foreign policy presentation next week?"

    My advice to the requester:

    1. Don't put text on a PowerPoint slide

    2. Use personal stories

    3. Practice, practice, and practice

    First, don't use Microsoft's PowerPoint for text.

    I know, I know. Most of the business and educational world will tell you to put together a good PowerPoint presentation. I will suggest to you to put together a good Presentation. Then if must use PowerPoint, use it for visuals. Charts, tables, and photos. Visuals do three things, in order of importance.

    Photos show a thing that cannot be adequately described or must be accurately recognized. Charts give the audience a visual comparison of numbers, allowing them to see the difference. Tables give the audience a visual representation of large groups of numbers. That's what a PowerPoint slide is good for.

    However, a good presentation is an intriguing weave of words that attracts, explains, and persuades your audience like reading a good book. Remember listening to someone tell you a good story? That's how you should make your audience feel.

    Use descriptive phrases and intriguing example stories. Pull the stories from your own life experiences, professional and personal. Use the stories that you share with your friends and family in informal settings. Chances are, you've told them many times already. Tie them in with points in your presentation.

    Most importantly... practice, practice, PRACTICE. Any athlete can tell you that the ratio of time spent in practice is phenomenally large in comparison to time in the game. If the presentation is important to you and your career, give it the time needed for you to be confident, competent, and fully comfortable in practice.

    This is a quick summary on what I consider to be some of the most important points in good presentation. There are many more, such as: using the singular you, using eye contact without scanning the audience, good use of pauses (many people fear the pause).

    My best advice to you... Get some help and/or coaching before you need it. But you can still put together a good presentation right now. Good Luck!"

    Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Masters

    In PowerPoint presentations, the Slide Master controls the look and feel of the presentation. Changes made on the Slide Master can affect every slide in the presentation, although you're always given the option of applying changes only to the slide you're working with. The Slide Master provides a great way to add uniform elements, such as logos or page numbers, to a slide presentation.

    To access the Slide Master, select View > Slide Master. In Office 2007, the Slide Master tab can be found on the far left of the screen. From the Slide Master tab, you can control all of the major elements of a slide, including the layout, titles, footers and their attributes, colours, fonts, effects, background styles and slide orientation. Changes you make on the Slide Master will affect each slide in the presentation unless you indicate otherwise.

    The Slide Master contains text and graphics placeholders. A placeholder is a pre-formatted text box where you can insert title or body text for your slide. You can also insert graphics, graphs or other pre-defined elements, depending upon the type of placeholder you apply.

    You can insert and delete placeholders. To insert a placeholder, select the Insert Placeholder button found on the ribbon. Select the type of placeholder you want to add. To delete a placeholder, select it and press the Delete key. You can also select Delete from the Edit menu, or right click on the placeholder and select the Delete option.

    Placeholders can be moved around the slide like any other graphical object. To move a placeholder on the Slide Master, select it and then drag it to the location of your choice.

    Placeholders have resizing handles at the corners and along the midpoints of the placeholders that allow you to determine how much space on the slide the placeholder will consume. To resize a placeholder, activate the sizing handles by clicking on the placeholder. Select the appropriate sizing handle and drag the placeholder to resize it.

    As you add and subtract placeholders, keep in mind that any changes you make on the Slide Master may affect every slide in your presentation.

    Don't upgrade to Office 2007 until you HAVE to!! - Creative Shopper - Colorado
    Office 2007 is designed to make things easier, but it just kills your productivity. I spend more time hunting for features I knew how to use in previous versions or trouble-shooting bugs on features that were incompletely tested in the rush to market. I don't want to watch the MS tutorials or look at all the MS cross references to find out how to do something, I've been doing for 15 years. Software is supposed to automate processes and make tasks easier--Office 2007 really missed the boat. I did figure out how to add the commands I use a lot to the Quick Access Toolbar and if you right-click on some things, familiar windows and menus pop up...but it now takes multiple clicks to do something you used to do with one click.

    I had downloaded the 60-day Trial Version and hated it and was actually going to try to find an Office 2003 version, which is compatible with Windows 7, to load on my new laptop. However, the older versions were about the same price as 2007 and I thought I might be forced to upgrade in the near future....just to stay compatible...and didn't want to pay another hefty license fee again. I only bought 2007, because it came with a free option to download the 2010 version for free-which I'm hoping will be an improvemnt to 2007.

    Stay with Office 2003 (or even older versions) until you have to upgrade.

    If it were not for needing this version of the software for my current client engagements I would NEVER buy this. Overpriced, with plenty of good options out there. And now there is 2010 coming.

    It is amazing how Microsoft is able to kill all my system resources every time there is a new version of their product out.

    Macros written on Office 2000 or 2003 are suddenly extremely slow and bring sporadic errors - a new version usually brings improvements - not in this case.

    Opening a small Word or Excel document takes forever, after you double clicked on the file, go ahead and do something else - it wont show the file for a while - first office needs to start up which takes at least 30 seconds - and then the file will be opened, which takes another 15 seconds. When I open the same file in Office 2000 - it takes 5 seconds and I can work with it.

    There are some nice features, especially formatting that is impressing. If you can find the functions - MS has resorted everything and I had/have to use the help function in order to find what I am looking for - I am sure this will fade over time, but for the beginning your productivity is going down.

    For the price of the package, compared to previous releases, it is almost not a real improvement since everything got soo slow (do they put waitstates in the SW in order to make you buy a new PC?)

    HINT: Keep your old Office version installed or you will run into unsolvable problems! (or you have to invest quite some time to get your files working again, but then extremely slow:VB macros)

    Amazing that a company would release a 2007 version of their product with less functionality than the 2000 version, but Microsoft did.
    And what's with the Ribbons crap. You want me to send all of my employees to a training class because you decided to file all the commands in new locations.
    You disabled hot-keys - that's insane.

    Thank goodness we saved the Office 2000 Disc.

    For a few applications we are using Google docs.

    I see a huge opportunity to replace Microsoft office.
    Monopoly today - gone tomorrow!

    I installed this software with some hesitation, because so many utility software packages have had problems in the past with 64-bit versions of Windows. However, the best and really only way to find out is to try, so I rebooted my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine and did a fresh install of Roxio Creator 2010.

    I'm very happy to report that I had no issues with the installation or with using the various software programs included with this package!

    Having used both Roxio Easy CD Creator and Nero in the past, using this package was a familiar experience. There wasn't any trouble figuring out where to find a particular utility, nor how to use them. I was able to burn a DVD without any trouble, which sounds simple, but it's not something that you can assume these packages will always do without some accomodations for a particular drive, 64-bit drivers, and so on.

    As far as the Roxio product vs. Nero's product that I have used in the past, I wouldn't say that either has an overwhelming advantage over the other. I have not tried Nero 9 or 10, so I can't make a direct comparison between the latest and greatest products from both manufacturers.

    Bottom line is that it is compatible with Windows 7 64-bit and that no issues were found with any of the utilities that I ran.
