Macworld Cover Creation

After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs. On the technical side, for the time lapse video, I used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 24mm-70mm zoom. I chose the 5D because of its great image quality with high ISO's. Canon's sRAW1 gave me the flexibility of a RAW file with the file size of a jpeg. The actual Macworld cover was taken with a Phase One P65+ digital back attached to a 4x5 Sinar X camera with a 65mm lens. Many thanks to Rob Schultz for allowing me to invade his office and literally shoot over his shoulder. The music was used with permission by The Brokenmusicbox.

FCC Push to Sovietize Broadcast Media in America!!

Since that time, the agency that controls the broadcast communications medium "in the public interest" has proposed a scheme to regulate content sent out over the airwaves. FCC bureaucrat Copps tells BBC "American media has a bad case of substance abuse." Last week FCC Commissioner Michael Copps suggested broadcasters be subject to a new "public values test" every four years. Copps said that the test would make a broadcaster's license renewal contingent upon evidence that they meet a prospective set of federal criteria. Broadcasters would have to prove to the FCC and the government they have made a meaningful commitment to public affairs and news programming (as determined by the government). They would have to prove they are committed to diversity programming, report to the government about which shows they plan to air, require greater disclosure about who funds political ads and devote 25 percent of their prime-time coverage to local news, according to a story posted by The Hill. In short, the FCC is moving toward a state-run media no different than the one in the Soviet Union and any number of crackpot dictatorships around the world. Rep. Joe Barton of Texas asked Copps whether "five commissioners can do a better job of ensuring that Americans have access to a wide diversity of content and viewpoints than ...

Keeping Track of Ideas - 3 Tools for Taking Notes

Taking notes is something that happens at all times of the day and just about everywhere I go. I've long searched for the best tool to take notes. I've gone from high tech to a pencil and paper. Paper has officially been retired for me. Too many tools are out there to make my notes way more useful than they have ever been when I write them on paper. This is a review of the goods and bads of some of the tools I've tried.

Freemind is a free tool available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. It's really a mind-mapping tool, but I like to use it for taking random notes. It's great for brainstorming, but it didn't suit my needs for storing large volumes of notes that don't really have a connection. For example, it felt weird to have notes about family events in the same places as notes about an upcoming work project. You can insert links to the web, local files, or even other parts of your "mind map". Visual cues can be added to each node on your map so that you can identify notes that represent questions, tasks, important items, etc. The biggest downside is that i have to be on my laptop to add or edit my notes. Another negative was that I found myself focusing more on the tool than on the content of my notes. Finally, adding files and other content to my notes was less than thrilling. Because the links to local files were based on the file's location (and not a note-based copy), I was breaking my notes by moving files all the time. In summary, Freemind is great for brainstorming and less than stellar for regular note-taking.

Microsoft OneNote is a great tool that comes as a part of the Microsoft Office suite. OneNote has TONS of features, which can be both a pro and a con. One of my favorite features of OneNote is the familiar way it's organized. Your notes are set up just like they would be in a paper notebook. They are filed into Notebooks, which have sections. Those sections can have pages, and the pages can have sub-pages. Each page is like a free form word processor document that allows you to click anywhere and start typing. You can easily annotate anything that has been added to your pages by drawing shapes, adding highlighting, or even typing text. The searchability of OneNote notebooks is great. It even allows your to tag notes or pieces of notes as to do items and questions, among other things, and search for them. OneNote has some basic OCR, but it has not performed well for me.

Microsoft has improved the ability to edit OneNote notebooks on the go for users of Office 2010. You can sync your notebooks with the web-based version of OneNote and edit them there as well as on your PC. I haven't used the web version, but I assume it doesn't offer all of the features of the desktop version. However, I have read reviews that state it performs strongly. If you have a Windows Phone 7 device, you can even edit your notes on the go. If you are an avid MS Office user, OneNote is definitely a strong candidate for your notetaking tool.

Evernote is currently my tool of choice for several reasons. I take notes all the time. I am not always at my computer. With Evernote, I can take notes on my laptop, phone, or even on someone else's computer via their web app. Everything is saved in the cloud and synced locally. I can take clippings of interesting things from the web on my phone or PC. Plus, you can get Evernote for Mac, Windows, iOS, BlackBerry, and Android.

Evernote is extremely searchable. Evernote has tagging to allow me to tag notes with subject descriptors. I can also break up my notes into notebooks. With Evenote, I fire up the software, add the note, and go. Organization isn't a priority because everything is searchable. Honestly, this paradigm takes a bit of getting used to for those of us that like to be organized. Sometimes, it feels like it's a bit chaotic. Like OneNote, Evernote can recognize text inside of pictures. In my experience, Evernote's performance is better. Evernote recognizes my handwriting in nearly all my notes (disclaimer: I have pretty nice handwriting). I can take a picture of my hand-written note, upload it with my HTC Evo (Android), and my handwritten notes are now searchable.

Evernote has its negatives, too. Drawing in a note, like in OneNote, is out. Adding shapes and moving text around to notate an image are out too. Notebooks with lower level divisions, like pages, don't exist. Basically, it treats a note as a page.

There are positives and negatives to each of these tools. Freemind is great for brainstorming, but the forced structure felt awkward for regular notes. OneNote is a fantastic tool, but only Windows Phone 7 devices can use it on the go. As I said before, Evernote is my current tool of choice because it is simple and available. While there are some formatting options in Evernote, the tool focuses on function over form, which I believe helps me in the log run. Try them out for yourself and see what you think. Any one of these tools is a strong addition to your software "toolbelt".

Remove Antivirus Studio 2010

Antivirus Studio 2010 is a fake antivirus program that infects your computer and basically harasses you into buying the full version of the program. This type of infection is known as ransomware because the program is pretty much asking for ransom money in order for it to stop its harassment. Needless to say, if you do fall for the trick and end up buying Antivirus Studio 2010, that will not be the end of the story. Not only will your computer remain infected, the credit card which you used to make the purchase will also become compromised. So no matter what you do, do not buy this program. If you have been duped into buying, call your bank immediately and notify them of the scam.

Antivirus Studio 2010 removal is not straight forward. For one, it can disable any existing antivirus program as well as block access to updates and websites. The program also replaces your Task Manager with a fake one that highlights in red color, process names to say that those processes are infected. Among other tactics that this fake program uses to persuade you into buying it is to make your computer increasingly sluggish. The screen can start flickering and you may also be subjected to a recurring voice message saying 'new virus found'.

Additionally, Antivirus Studio 2010 pretends to scan your computer and detect various severe and/or critical infections. Do not fall for this trick.

To remove Antivirus Studio 2010, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up your Task Manager. Look for any process named 'securitycenter.exe' or 'securityhelper.exe'. Once you have located such process, click on it to highlight it then click on the 'End Process' button. Repeat this until you have shut down any of the processes listed above. You should now be able to update your existing antivirus program and run a full scan.

If nothing works in your favor or you don't get the required results, it is recommended you switch to a third-party repair software.

Consider a practical scenario, wherein, you attempt to convert an Access 2002 (XP) database to Access 2003, you may receive the following error:

"An error occurred while loading Form_FormName. Do you want to continue?"

And, if you click Yes, you receive another error message which goes like:

"Invalid procedure call or argument"

Cause

The above error suggests that Microsoft Access 2002 (XP) database is corrupt.

Resolution

You can try the following Access database recovery steps in order to fix the problem:

Since Access 2002 and Access 2000 use different binaries for compile code, a decompile may work. (Microsoft Access keep two copies of the code i.e. text version and compiled version, if both are out of sync, you may come across strange errors. In such scenarios, a decompile helps by dumping the compiled version.)

1.Make a copy of the.MDB file while Access is not running
2.Use the Compact and Repair tool
3.Close Access. Open a command prompt and enter the following
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft office\office\msaccess.exe" /decompile "c:\My Documents\MyDatabase.mdb"
4.Again Compact
5.Try the conversion again, the error may not surface this time.

If you are not able to overcome the nagging problem, do not worry, go to the Internet and download a professional access repair utility. Such utilities are able to repair an MS Access database when it is not compiled or if it has got corrupted due to an external reason.
