The Improving Grantmaking Outlook in 2010 Requires Ministries to Be Strong, Smart, and Strategic!

The economic downturn has reduced foundation assets, forcing funders to cut expenses and limit grantmaking. Foundations suffered a 22 percent reduction in assets in late 2008, fairing much better than the overall market in general. As a result, 2009 witnessed the sharpest decline in grantmaking in decades. The 2010 outlook is much more promising as many foundations have recovered the majority of the lost assets since the market low point 1 year ago. Since then, the S&P 500 Index has rallied by 68%, representing the strongest one-year recovery since the Great Depression and leading to many foundations surpassing gaining in wealth.

However, it is not all good news and grantmaking will never go back to the way it was before the market dropped. Foundations have learned valuable lessons through this process making them more strategic and demanding greater accountability. But there are plenty of things you can do to attract funding for your ministry.

Christian ministries and churches want to know if the economic recovery we're seeing will facilitate more grantmaking in 2010. The only way to answer that question is to turn to funders themselves. They do not speak with one voice. Their answers differ, which is not surprising considering the unknowns of the recovery and diversity of the foundations themselves. They are, however, as a whole, much more optimistic than they were a year ago, according to the findings of a Dini Partners' poll of the nation's leading foundation leaders.

In its Dini Partners Giving in 2010 survey, Dini Partners polled a select group of philanthropists to get their views on the recovery and the future of grantmaking.

Forty percent of the poll respondents expect to see renewed economic growth or believe the economy will continue to improve throughout 2010 and greatly stabilize by the end of the year. Twenty-seven percent expect to return to their high prerecession giving levels of 2008. An astounding 70% said they will give more than they did in the depressed giving year of 2009, 13% said their giving will depend on how well the stock market does, and 23% said they will give less than in previous years. Fourteen percent said they will give the same or slightly less than in 2009.

These findings, though mixed, reflect growing optimism. A year ago 62 percent of respondents said they would reduce giving in 2009 while only five percent said they would give more.

The Foundation Giving Forecast Survey by the Foundation Center queried over 500 foundations in September 2009, including 429 independent foundations, 110 community foundations, and 54 corporate foundations.

Fifty-four percent of the respondents said they will either match their 2009 level of giving in 2010 (39.4 percent) or increase it (14.1 percent). Smaller foundations which are more likely to be supportive of Christian ministries and churches are twice as likely as large foundations to give more in 2010. (Large foundations are those that give at least $10 million annually). About one in five foundations expect to give less in 2010 and 26% are uncertain how much they'll give.

Even a continued economic recovery this year wouldn't increase giving much by the largest foundations as grant budgets depend on rolling asset value averages from the two previous years.

All things considered, foundation giving likely will grow somewhat in 2010 and may see a strong resurgence in 2011. Optimism is on the upswing, opportunities for this year do exist, and 2010 is the right time for Christian ministries and churches to develop a strong grant development foundation for 2011.

Steps to making your Christian ministry fundable

The economic downturn is forcing funders to give strategically. More than ever, they must ensure that the funds they provide yield results. This means that you too must act strategically. More than ever, you need to give foundations what they want and heed grantmaking trends.

Foundations are increasingly interested in funding outcomes and causes rather than particular organizations. The answer is not to adapt your mission to each foundation, becoming everything to everyone. Your ministry will become much more fundable in these times by becoming known for staying true to its mission.

Development experts have other ideas as we transition from the harsh funding environment of last year to the better days ahead. Below is the Here-4-You Christian Grant Consulting version of the "Be Attitudes" for laying a strong foundation for grant development in 2010 and 2011.

Be Measured: Your "goals will be measured against your mission, tested against anticipated outcomes and community impact, and aligned with the specific collaborative input of donors."
Be Realistic: This means, "Do not return to the goals and high expectations of 2006 and 2007; at the same time do not remain mired in the anguish of 2009."
Be Intentional: "We are now going to be even more intentional, deliberate, and purposeful in our decision-making process." Funders want you to do the same in your grant proposal-preparation process.
Be Creative: In today's grantmaking environment, this means "moving away from a 'reaction phase' to an 'action phase.'"
Be Strategic: "It is these plans that will express the measured, realistic, intentional, and creative underpinning of campaign and fundraising objectives and goals."
Be Communicative: This means cultivate close personal relationships with both prospective gift donors and current ones. "This continues to be a period in which the close personal stewardship of relationships is paramount."
Be Appealing: "In a surprising shift away from traditional thinking, the merits of the appeal - its mission alignment, precision of statement, and clarity of presentation - far surpass the importance of the person asking for the gift."
Be Selective: Funders recommend that you "sustain and further develop annual fund support, along with welcoming select capital initiatives and campaigns...and rebuild endowment values through highly selective fundraising efforts, provided the endowment is guided by conservative and very deliberate investment policies and management."
Be Stronger: "Given the time that has passed since the beginning of the recession, there is an expectation that most institutions have made adjustments to programming and expense management that would move them away from rescue fundraising for the operating budget."
Be Collaborative: Seek out collaboration - foundations are urging likeminded organizations to fuse their resources to combat problems, enabling you to achieve more together than you ever could apart.
Be Sustainable: Demonstrate sustainability - credibly explain how you'll fund your program once the grant period ends.
Be Transparent: Transparency means providing easy access to financial information, mission and vision, programming plans, projects, and financial data.

Conclusion

In an environment in which more and more organizations battle for fewer and fewer grants, one funder in the Foundation Center poll spoke for the many by saying, "The long-term impact of the economic crisis on the nonprofit sector will be that only the strongest, smartest, and most strategic will survive." Ensuring that your ministry is strong, smart, and strategic in its grant development approach is crucial to your funding success and to your long-term viability.

It could very well be the result of some intense competition, as the Bengals face one of the toughest playing schedules of all NFL teams. In 2008 they will be facing the Baltimore Ravens, the Cleveland Browns, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Indianapolis Colts, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins and last year's Super Bowl winner the New York Giants.

As far as coaching goes, things are remaining status quo, at least when it comes to the direction of head coach Marvin Lewis. This is Lewis' fifth year with the Bengals. Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski has also remained with the team. The only factor that Bengals owner Mike Brown determined was that the defense of the team was weak. Therefore, out goes defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan who is soon replaced by Mike Zimmer. Linebacker coach Ricky Hunley was also replaced by Jeff FitzGerald. What's interesting about the Bengals is that their coach usually plans a theme about the upcoming season. The 2008 theme for the Cincinnati Bengals is "Now." As in, now it's about time for the Bengals to start winning! The theme idea must be very popular and is apparently Coach Marvin Lewis' saving grace.

What about departures that will affect the team in 2008? The team has lost Safety Madieu Williams to the Minnesota Vikings, along with defensive end Justin Smith who found greener pastures with the San Francisco 49ers and linebacker Landon Johnson who signed on with the Carolina Panthers. Additionally, the team lost David Pollack, who has officially retired due to a major injury. The team also lost two players because of off-the-field controversies. Chris Henry was released after news spread about his alleged involvement in an assault case in the city of Cincinnati. Odell Thurman, was also suspended for two consecutive years after violating the NFL's substance abuse policy though he was reinstated this past May.

How about some signings that may bring good news to the Bengals in 2008? The team has acquired the talents of Ben Utecht a tight end with the Indianapolis Colts, Antwan Odom, a defensive end with the Tennessee Titans and Doug Gabriel, a wide receiver with the Oakland Raiders.

What about Chad Johnson? Chad Johnson has enjoyed better stats than a typical wide receiver and is a force to be reckoned with. This may explain why he changed agents and is now represented by Drew Rosenhaus. At the present time it is rumored he may choose to refuse participation in the upcoming training camp with the Bengals or even for the entire upcoming season if he's not traded. Johnson was apparently miffed with some comments made by head coach Marvin Lewis months ago.

What can you say except that the Cincinnati Bengals are facing an uphill battle for the next season?

Migrate Contacts From Lotus Notes to Outlook Exchange Server 5.5 or Exchange 2000

With the advancement of technology, the ways of managing data has changed and so are the needs. Migration from Lotus Note to Outlook and vice-versa is quite common these days. Users keep on migrating for better communication medium among employees. Lotus Notes and MS Outlook, both are widely used email client in almost every organization. Each of them has their own advantages and disadvantages. Many organizations prefer to switch to Outlook from Lotus Notes. Few of the basic reasons, which are compelling people to switch, are as follows:

Users unfamiliar with Lotus Notes

The process of switching from one email client to another is a tedious task and hence a proper planning is required before switching. There are several aspects, which have to be kept in mind before switching. If you are migrating from Notes to Outlook Exchange Server 5.5 or Exchange 2000, you may also want to migrate the personal contacts of Lotus Notes users along with other mails and required content. Migration Wizard (Migwiz.exe) is the handy solution to migrate mails and other required data from Lotus Notes. It is installed with Outlook Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 and is readily available for use. However, it cannot be used to migrate the personal contacts from the Lotus client computer. Although, using.csv files to migrate contacts is an easy solution, but this method very time consuming. The idea is not feasible especially when you want to migrate dat in short notice of time. Certainly, you need to have a handy solution that can convert Notes to Outlook in shortest possible time. Using third-party migration tool is therefore a suitable way. Bright Outlook For RN Jobs

The employment outlook for RN jobs in the United States is on the upswing. Up until the year 2016, it is predicted that the job market for registered nurses will be so wide open, that the RN will basically be able to "write their own ticket." The nursing field has always been a popular career choice because it pays very well, it offers flexibility, and there are a number of different avenues the registered nurse can take while pursuing their career.

The registered nurse who is newly graduated will most likely want to seek employment in a hospital setting. There is no other setting that prepares the RN to work in any capacity better than in the hospital. With hospital experience under their belt, the RN can easily function in any job capacity that they may consider.

The hospital provides many different experiences for the registered nurse. The inexperienced nurse may start out on a general medicine floor to gain valuable experience, and then if they choose, can move on to a specialty unit such as ICU, CCU, Labor and Delivery, Dialysis, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, or any other number of specialties available at the hospital.

The hospital nurse may even consider a non clinical position. Hospitals have utilization review departments that employ registered nurses to oversee worker's compensation and insurance. Other non clinical RN jobs in the hospital may be hospital bill audit. The nurse auditor compares the patient bill with the hospital bill. This position can benefit both the patient and the hospital because the experienced nurse auditor can find overcharges on the patient's bill and undercharges on the hospital bill.

Registered nurses may decide the hospital setting is not for them. They may find the stress level is too high or they may not be confident in their clinical skills. For these nurses, a long term care setting might be more suitable for them. The long term care nurse can enjoy much flexibility in their schedules, and a lower acuity level. The long term care nurse will still need to utilize their clinical skills, especially if the long term care facility is a skilled facility, however, many of the residents are clinically stable and do not require skilled care.

The registered nurse has many career options from which to choose. The RN may find job satisfaction in a doctor's office where they utilize their social skills with patients while assisting the physician with the office flow. The RN may enjoy patient interaction and telephone triage. Many nurse's have reservations about choosing employment in a doctor's office because historically, the salary of the office nurse was not equal to that of the hospital nurse. Many doctors however, do compensate their office nurses very well, because good skillful nurses are an asset to their practice, and they want to retain them.

It is a comfort for the RN to know that if they are unhappy in their current position, there are many more from which to choose. It's easy for the nurse to suffer from nursing "burn out." This is very unfortunate, but can be easily remedied. With the variety of different specialties the nurse can choose from, the nurse can keep a positive attitude about the professional and this will transcend to their patients for whom they went into nursing to begin with.

Schedule a Meeting Using Outlook

Meetings involve two or more people and sometimes resources. A resource may be a conference room, VCR, slide projector, laptop computer, or any other equipment. Using Outlook, you may send a meeting invitation to anyone you designate, they will then have the option of either accepting or rejecting the invitation, and they can even propose a new time for the meeting.

To create a meeting in a certain block of time, click the calendar icon on the navigation pane, then highlight a certain time for the meeting to take place. Now choose new meeting request from the actions menu, and click to. Select anybody you wish to attend the meeting, and choose any resources that will be included, or you can type the addresses manually, click ok when you are finished with this. Now you need to type descriptions for the meeting in both the subject box and the location box, once you have finished this, simply add notes, directions or any comments needed for the meeting. Click send and you have finished, anybody you selected will receive this invitation to attend the meeting.

You can also specify a meeting date and time for your meeting to take place manually. First, create a new meeting, and then add any attendees, subjects and a location for it to take place. Now click the down arrow in the start time date field, and select the starting date. Now click the down arrow again and select a starting time for the meeting to take place. Finally, click the down arrow another time, and select the ending time, click send, and you are finished.

To conclude, scheduling a meeting using outlook is simple. Within a few minutes you can invite a number of different people to attend it. Using outlook to schedule your meeting is much more convenient than most methods and therefore should be considered when setting up a meeting.

NHL Season Outlook

Everybody's getting excited about the new hockey season. We're all anxious to see how our team are gonna do. However, the excitement isn't just contained in the NHL. It's also in youth hockey, the CCHA, and amateur hockey.

Everybody is getting ready for the new season. I know I am. But really, are things going to be much different then last season?

The answer is yes.

I'm going to talk about all of the things that have happened that are going to make this season much different then the last.

The first thing that I want to talk about is going to be the biggest fall from power a team has experienced this off-season. The Detroit Red Wings have lost a lot of crucial members. Although they will still be able to play well and will probably make the playoffs, they probably won't win a Stanley Cup.

Another team that we're going to watch is the Phoenix Coyotes. The problem is that we won't be watching them on the ice (they're gonna lose a lot of games). We're going to be watching them while they try to settle a bankruptcy issue. Hopefully they'll be able to get that sorted out before the end of the season. However, with Gretzky stepping down, it's going to be a little bit harder.

Finally, we have to know whose going to surprise us this year. To me, the team that looks the best is the Anaheim Ducks. They looked really good last year defeating San Jose in the first round of the playoffs. Even though they were an 8 seed, they still managed to pull out a win in the first round and a stunning 7 game performance in the second.

The thing is that they won most of their games after the trade deadline. This tells me that they're going to be even better this year, since they'll have good players for the entire year and not just 1 month. I would look for them to win a lot of games and go far in the playoffs.

Rolling head-long into the new decade, we are now only a few short weeks from entering into the forth quarter of 2010. The big question on the minds of millions: What is on the economic horizons? What is the financial outlook for the 4th quarter of 2010 and beyond? And, how will the economy effect you and your family? Let's take a look at these questions and more in this, A 2010 Financial Outlook: The 4th Quarter Report.

We are currently living in perhaps the most dynamic times in the history of our planet. Let's face it, our world is a mess. Physically, emotionally and financially.

Despite what governments around the globe would have us believe, the economy is not getting any better. Ever since the false, taxpayer funded, multi-trillion dollar bailout of 2008-2009 got underway, there has been no "Real" economic recovery. Facts are, we never really left the recession.

It's time we all woke up and read the writing on the out-house walls. The sugar high we've experienced over the last 18 months is over. Much like the false recovery experienced in 1931 - 1932, we will soon revisit new lows in the stock market like never before seen, ultimately breaking through those as well.

There is no denying we are treading on dark and dangerous economic times. Many now believe we have entered into the next phase of the $50 trillion wealth transfer that some economists have been predicting for years.

Soon, the focus is sure to shift to fears of global sovereign debt collapse. Euro-land, Japan, the UK, and ultimately the U.S. will be unable to pay their debts. This is when we will find out if the powers-that-be attempt to end this Depression in the same manner they did in the 1930's. The question remains. Who will become this generations Hitler? Who will take the role Germany played during those dark times?

It is apparent, businesses from all industries, and individuals alike, are now tip-toeing around on financial eggshells like back-stage ballerinas, waiting to see what the orchestra plays next.

Just in case you haven't been paying attention, the stock market is currently poised on the edge of yet another downward spiral into the murky abyss of sub 10,000. As this is being written, the DOW has lost another 140 points. Next stop, 9,600? Who knows how low we may go from there.

On the "Home Front", despite record breaking low mortgage rates, news this morning from The National Association of Realtors indicates existing home sales for the month of July fell 27.2%. Sales are now at the lowest level since the total existing-home sales series launched in 1999, and single family sales - accounting for the bulk of transactions - are at the lowest level since May of 1995.

No one can seem to qualify for a new home loan or banks just won't give them up. It's either that, or folks don't dare spend what little money they do have squirreled away in fear of what may be around the next bend.

And what about all the new jobs our leaders so boldly promised just months back? According to President Obama just a few short months ago, we were well on our way up "the road to recovery". Where is all that promised relief? Who sucked the breath out of the federal economic recovery plan this time? Or, was it simply full of hot air to begin with?

As if this weren't enough, while the unemployment rate in the U.S. continues to teeter on the edge of double digits, the number of under-employed is now reaching levels never before seen. Record numbers of folks, all around the world, are working for far less money than ever before. Making ends meet is now as hard for many as teeing off with The Pope himself. Take a closer look at these unemployment numbers you'll find, within some industries, unemployment figures are actually closer to 20%, or more. Scary stuff when you consider how many folks aren't even counted.

Many are now forced to cash in their retirement accounts just so they can put food on the table and pay the electric bill. Personal bankruptcies are spiking and more personal credit accounts are going into default than at any other time in history.

So what does all of this mean? What does a simple carpenter, with a head full hope and a heart full of hate, do about it anyway?

Oh, and how about this little news flash? Now that the federal government is considering massive principle reductions - forgiveness - on underwater mortgages. Many can soon expect to experience an overnight write-off to their home an property value the likes of which you've never seen.

Think about. If your neighbor is underwater on their mortgage, now the government steps in, essentially re-appraising the value of their home and "re-valuing" it. Now, what do you think will happen to the value of your home? Yep, you guessed it, the value of your house just fell through the floor joists like a lead brick headed to the bottom of the deep-end.

If you think the Ground Zero Mosque, or even Obama Care, is a bust with the public, you may be surprised to find that a whopping 82% of those polled believe that "principal forgiveness" is a horrible idea, bordering on the edge of lunacy.

However, since there appears to be zero limit to the amount stupidity that we are witnessing from this administration, don't write this possibility off. In fact, you should probably be surprised if they don't do it.

And get this! Word on the street, now there may be another lame brain idea in the works. Believe it or not, the next "innovative idea" coming straight down the pike from the Washington, "Bankrupt The U.S. As Quickly As Possible" playbook, could be across the board credit score increases.

What the? That's right. Assume that your credit score is 600, which means you can not buy a house unless you make a 30% down payment. Well, with this new idea, your credit score could immediately be raised by 20%, giving you a score of 720. Now, you can run right out and buy that home with just 5-10% down, possibly less, no matter what it's worth.

There's not enough time in the day to go over all the problems associated with this cock-screwed idea. Even an old wood butcher can see the slippery slope this will lead to. Let's just say, it would cause a massive drop in the value of the U.S. dollar overnight.

This crashing dollar, along with a complete loss of confidence in the U.S. economy globally, would, of course, cause real estate prices to plummet even more across the board. Subsequently, we would have a 20% increase in the value of gold and silver. That said, it now seems apparent, we're headed there anyway.

So there you go. A 2010 Financial Outlook - The 4th Quarter Report in a nut shell, straight from the blurry eyes of an old, worn-out, wood butchering, Colorado carpenter.
