Things You Should Know About the Outlook Pst File

Outlook uses special files with an extension.pst to store information and data on your computer. Your mailboxes, personal contacts and email folders are stored using these files. The extension.pst stands for Personal Folders. Maximum size of these files can be up to 2 GB. All these files are formatted according to ANSI (American National Standards Institute) formats. If you are using Microsoft Outlook 2003 or higher, you have an option to have files larger than twenty Gigabytes. Here the PST file is in a different format. UNICODE has been used as formatting standard for PST files in MS Outlook 2003 and higher. All these files are stored at a default location by MS Outlook. The 'outlook' folder can be found in the local settings of a specific user on your operating system.

Under normal conditions, your default file is named as outlook.pst. You can find another file with.pst extension in the 'outlook' folder. This file is named as archive.pst. Your PST file is more likely to get damaged if it's huge in size. With increase in the size of PST file, Outlook has to devote more resources and it becomes prone to errors. As soon as you receive the outlook message about PST file being corrupted, you can begin the repair operation. Outlook will try to repair the file at its own in the first step. You will need to perform some tasks manually if Outlook fails to repair automatically.

Outlook even suggests you to use Inbox Repair tool to fix corrupted files. This tool can fix the files corrupted by a hard drive error or by outlook itself. If you have been using non-standard third party add-in that corrupts the file, Inbox Repair tool can do little to repair your PST file.
