The Goal Seek Instrument in Excel

You can use Goal Seek when you know the result you want to get after using a certain formula, but you don't know the values of the operands. Excel changes the values in a specific cell when you look for the operands until the formula gives you the result you want.

In order to understand how this instrument operates, we should create a simple scenario. Let's assume you are a salesman and you need to sell items worth of ten thousand pounds by the end of the month in order to get a bonus. It is well-known that you have sold items worth of three thousand pounds and a product costs 2.6 pounds. It is true that it would be much easier to calculate everything with (10000-3000)/2.6 and get the result, but the advantage of Goal Seek is that you can create the formula once and then change the data in order to get the goal much faster.

Here is what you have to do when you use this instrument. First of all, you select the cell with the formula and then execute the sequence Tools/Goal Seek for your Goal Seek box to appear. The next list describes the entries for each object in this box: Set cells (you set the cells) indicates the location of the formula you are using in order to get the final goal. In this case, the formula is in D7 and it only multiplies the number of objects sold by their price. Then, you introducer the value in the To value box and indicate the location of the target cell in By changing cell. Then, you press Enter or OK. This is when Excel starts looking for the goal you indicated.
