Creating Custom Headers and Footers in Word 2003

Headers and footers in Word can be created for the entire document, or can be customised by section. A well-designed header or footer can help guide your reader through your document, and can help keep the document organised.

To edit a header or footer, use the Insert menu to select either the Header or Footer Option. Once selected, choose Edit Header or Edit Footer.

When the header or footer of a document is editable, the remainder of the page text will be grayed, and the header or footer area will be marked with a dashed line around the editable space. You can enter and edit text, format the header or footer and resize it when the header or footer space is activated. You can also make your changes using the Header & Footer Tools' Design tab.

When formatting the header or footer, you may format the font and all text attributes; the text alignment; page numbers; document properties; field codes; clip art and pictures; and the date and time. The formatting options for the header and footer can be accessed quickly by choosing the Design menu and selecting Quick Parts. You'll find several formatting options for Page Numbers, Properties, Fields and Pictures.

Since the header and footer will apply to each page in the document, Word also offers the option of creating a different first page, and unique headers for odd and even pages. This helps when creating title pages, and symmetrical facing pages.

You can close the header or footer by clicking on the inactive document text, or by choosing Close Header from the Design menu option.
